7 June 2010
Freeman House, Inverness Close

Hundred Houses Society development of the Elmfield site has turned a cul-de-sac of a number of ex council bungalows into thirty seven apartments and three bungalows for the over 55s. The new residents collected their keys to these modern, high standard and spacious two bedroom homes over two days at the end of May.

Kirsten Lavers was commission to develop and exploit the potential of the architectural design for the shared areas, particularly the corridors and main foyer. Chris Woods’ Optical Aggregates was commissioned to introduce sun tubes and mirror linings to the roof lights to enhance the lights brought into the corridors via wall panels and hanging dichroic discs to create effects in response to the changing light which are captured in camera obscura panels on the ground floor corridors. His work brings a little ‘magic’ and the fascination of the ever changing ‘delight of light’.

For the foyer a Julia Ball painting lit by natural daylight from over head is visible through the entrance doors and continues the theme of ‘delight in light’. Julia’s work is inspired by the light and landscape of East Anglia. While the commissioned painting is in process Julia has lent two of her painting to activate the visual potential of the foyer. To welcome and help the residents settle into their homes, Hundred Houses Tenants Association are organising a ‘Welcome to your new home’ get together at the end of June so everyone can meeting and introduce themselves and hopefully form long and lasting friendships and start to build a sense of community spirit.

Community BBQ
With summer in swing, and our estate being finally all sold, the VIE Residents' Association held a community BBQ (thanks to the Cantabrian's Boat club for the loan of their BBQ!) on the land at the front of our estate.  It was well attended by residents from across the estate, despite the rather windy weather!  A number of people commented that it was a great chance to meet people they live next to!
